A hidden gem located on the 2nd floor at Tanjong Pagar Plaza, The Teochew Kitchenette serves really good teochew fish soup and many other Teochew dishes. Though variety is not a lot, this small restaurant provides the home cooked kind of cuisine worth trying.
The lady boss of the restaurant is a chirpy and sporty lady so friendly and outspoken. The place is small, so most lunch crowds will do takeaway. We were there for dinner today to celebrate my birthday in advance with my this grp of lovely foodies.
We tried their new items, claypot curry fish head which takes 20mins preparation time. As the fish head is bigger, she kindly let us know that it will be priced at $29.80 instead of the usual price of $24.80.
The fish head was indeed very good and fleshy, with lots of meat and other vegetables in it. Its more spicy than the one at Yu Chun Village. Each has its own strength but we were more geared towards this one here due to its spiciness kick. Rating: 4.3/5
We ordered other dishes which included the below:
1. Teochew assorted braised ($5) - supposedly only available during lunch but fortunately there were extras. Very nicely braised pork belly, tau pok, taukua and egg. Lovely!! Rating: 4/5
2. Fuyong egg ($7.80) - fragrantly fried omelette so good with rice and even eating on its own. Rating: 4/5
3. Fried ngoh hiang ($8.80) - this is a must try item and deserves the 2 thumbs up. So far its one of the better ngoh hiangs. Crunchy and generous in filling and goes so well with the sweet sauce. Rating: 4.3/5
4. Luo han zhai ($4) - looks plain but surprisingly very tasty and soft. Rating: 4/5
5. Batang fish soup ($7.50) - generously sliced batang with minced pork in sweet tasting soup. So nostalgic and we love the soup sweetness. Rating: 4.2/5
For a bowl of lovely fish soup or teaochew cuisines, The Teochew Kitchenette is definitely 1 hidden gem that should be tried! We will be back for more!
