Located right at the back of Food Republic Orchard Isetan Shaw House where the old Japanese food town is, Ju Fu Mala Kitchen is a new Sichuan concept stall selling 麻辣香 and other fried Chuan dishes. The selection is rather wide, with vegetables pricing at $1 each, mushroom at $2, meat at $3 and seafood at $4. The base pot is charged at $2.50.

We waited quite long for the food to be cooked. It took about 20mins before it was served but it was well worth the wait. The dish was very fragrantly fried with the ingredients chopped nicely. The base is not too wet or dry and the noodles retained its QQness. Love its 香麻 taste. The only negative point is that its really expensive. For such a small portion, it costs $15.50.

Despite not value for money, we think that it's still worth a try. So do drop by if you are around the area this weekend.

Yi Ma Xiang Guo is a new mala restaurant opened in JCube which has taken over the previous Xin Wang HK restaurant. Yi Ma not only offers mala xiang guo but also many other Sichuan noodle dishes. Recently, the restaurant is offering different types of chuan fish at $18.

The base pot is charged at $3 and prices of the ingredients are rather steep as compared to other places. Vegetables are charged at $1.50 per 100g, meat at $3.80 and mushrooms/fungus at $2.80. They also offer premium seafood at $4.80. Noodles are charged at $1.50 per pkt and they are using nissin noodles.

We waited quite long before the food was served. It has pieces of fried you tiao as toppings which added to the pot flavour. The pot overall tasted more "ma" than "la". There was enough gravy and wasn't too dry. Very tasty indeed.

As the restaurant was still new, there was a little mixed up in the orders and the food serving was slow.

We were glad that the food taste compensated for its service. There is free flow of cold Chinese tea which is a must drink as the tea tasted great and it was good to kill the spiciness.

Yi Ma Xiang Guo could be considered as one of the better mala that we have tried. We should be back for more and hopefully the food service would have improved then.

Located on the 4th floor of Westgate, Gong Yuan Mala Tang offers a great dinner alternative to diners who wish to have hot piping soup on a cold day.

Customers are free to choose their own mala ingredients and Gong Yuan really offers a wide variety of them. There are only soup based options, choosing from 4 bases: mala, pork broth, pickled vegetables and tomato. All ingredients are charged at a standard price at $2.68 per 100g.

We opted for their mala base with medium spiciness. The soup base was thick and smooth with the right spiciness though its medium hot.

I love the soup and tasted especially good on a cold evening. Ingredients were fresh and there are things like cheese cuttlefish balls etc. We tried their black fungus dumplings at well at 5pcs for $3.50. Nothing too special.

We would give thumbs up for their mala soup and will definitelt be back to try the other soup bases. One trick to note is to get lighter ingredients since the price is the same for all ingredients.

In continuation of our 麻辣香锅 exploration, we were at Hillion Mall's Kopitiam to try 小蛮牛. This ma la stall is the first stall of Kopitiam and unlike other ma la stalls, it is Halal certified. This means that it does not offer pork as their choices and even the luncheon meat and taiwan sausages are chicken.

The price range is comparable to that of Food Republic. The meat is priced at $3.20 per 100g and the vegetable ranges from $2.20 per 100g onwards. We requested to be cooked in the least spicy level.

Fortunately, it was indeed less spicy but yet very delicious. The dish looks red and hot but the taste wasn't spicy at all. Very fragrantly fried and addictive in taste!

Why not drop by this stall for a visit for a pot of fragrant ma la these few days??

This is one of the best mala xiang guo stall that we have tried so far. Located at Food Pavilion coffee shop behind Clementi Mall, the stall offers a wide and fresh variety of vegetables, seafood and meat choices.

Seafood ranges from prawns, fish maw to sotong etc. Really spoilt for choices.

We picked a great variety of different vegetables from mushrooms to fungus to vegetables.

The plate feels heavy but surprisingly the bowl of food with 2 huge bowls of rice cost $16.80 only! For this portion at other places, it could easily cost us $25 or more. No wonder this stall is so popular among the students.

We loved their mala taste. At the least spiciness level, we could still taste the mala kick from the food. Simply awesome!

For mala lovers, pls do give this stall a try for cheap and delicious mala xiang guo! For non spicy eaters, they have the ingredients fried with oyster sauce that tasted equally good.

Everytime at Koufu Westmall, we will always see a crowd at the mala xiang guo stall. We were too lazy to queue for our food so always giving this stall miss. But today it was surprising that there were not many people at the stall. Maybe due to the heavy downpour outside. So we thought why not give it a try.

We picked mainly vegetables, mushrooms and fungus for our xiang guo. We added in a few meatballs as well. When told of the cost, we were rather surprised that the bowl cost us $17.

This is more expensive than the stall we had at JEM cookhouse foodcourt. We ordered much more meat then and it was only abt $21. Putting the cost aside let's review on the taste.

We called for the mild spiciness level. It was not as spicy as the one at JEM but we could still taste the mala every bite. Not hurting to our mouth and stomach and yet retain its taste. This was a little better than the JEM stall for people who cannot take spiciness.

This is another mala xiang guo stall worth trying.

Hubby's sudden craving for mala xiang guo today lead us to try this popular stall at JEM foodcourt. The foodcourt is situated at level 5 of JEM shopping mall and the stall is just right at the entrance of the foodcourt nearer the playground.

Mala xiang guo is a traditional Sichuan dish very popular with the China Chinese. There are a wide variety of vegetables and meat to choose from and the dish is priced by weight. The stall at JEM offers a very good variety of choices unlike some other stalls.

We picked mainly vegetables. Some must order vegetables include beancurd skin, black fungus, lotus root and mushrooms. For meat, we picked chicken and taiwan sausage. For spiciness, we picked the least spicy.

We were so glad that the least spicy level was very much acceptable and the dish so tastily fried. We enjoyed the dish without having to drink too much water unlike some other mala guo that we have tried.

For people who wants to try a decent yet not so spicy mala guo, this stall at JEM is strongly recommended.
