I was down with stomach flu for 2 days. After eating pure plain food for these 2 days, anything slightly tasty would definitely satisfy my craving.

Finally gotten to eat a little more solid food today so we went out to continue with our food exploration after 2 days of home eating.

Since deep fried and spicy food is out of my choice, we dropped by Joo Seng teochew porridge at Cheong Chin Nam Road for something healthier yet tasty food. There wasn't a huge crowd yet when we reached ard 6pm.

We ordered 6 dishes in all: sweet and sour pork, braised cabbage, fried beansprouts, braised tau pok, ngoh hiang and braised tau kee. The food portion was more generous as compared to Lim Joo Hin at Havelock road.

Paulin's Munchies - Joo Seng Teochew Porridge at Cheong Chin Nam Road - Porridge,Fried beansprouts and Braised cabbage

The food was tastier and overall cheaper as well. For these 6 dishes with 2 bowls of porridge, it costs us $18. The must try dishes include the braided tau pok and cabbage.

The tau pok was soaked with the flavourful gravy and you could taste the spice with every bite.

The braised cabbage was so soft that it simply disintegrated in our mouths.
The sweet and sour pork was another recommended dish.

So tenderly fried with homecook sauce. Simply awesome! Given our next round of visit when my tummy is better, I would definitely try their deep fried fish dishes and also their dried chilli shrimps.

We are back at Crystal Jade Kitchen to eat my favourite roasted spring chicken. This is our 3rd time here for their absolutely delicious chicken.

Besides the usual chicken, we ordered 3 other dishes to go with it. They are stir fried garlic broccoli, lai wan congee and fried spring roll
Paulin's Munchies - Crystal Jade Kitchen at Clementi Mall - Lai Wan Congee

The broccoli is fragrantly fried with minced garlic. Portion is a little small but still ok for 2 to share. The congee was good. Inside was generous portion of sliced fish, shredded pork and cuttlefish.
Paulin's Munchies - Crystal Jade Kitchen at Clementi Mall - Stir Fried Garlic Broccoli

The you tiao was crispy. Portion is good enough to share as well. Lastly was the commendable fried spring roll. It is self made by Crystal Jade and it was full of vegetables. Each mouthful was filled with mushroom and turnips. Yummy 😋

We just simply love Crystal Jade Kitchen for their dim sum and other main dishes. Look how happy Kevin looked after the meal.

Everytime at Koufu Westmall, we will always see a crowd at the mala xiang guo stall. We were too lazy to queue for our food so always giving this stall miss. But today it was surprising that there were not many people at the stall. Maybe due to the heavy downpour outside. So we thought why not give it a try.

We picked mainly vegetables, mushrooms and fungus for our xiang guo. We added in a few meatballs as well. When told of the cost, we were rather surprised that the bowl cost us $17.
Paulin's Munchies - Mala Xiang Guo at Koufu Westmall - Mala Xiang Guo

This is more expensive than the stall we had at JEM cookhouse foodcourt. We ordered much more meat then and it was only abt $21. Putting the cost aside let's review on the taste.

We called for the mild spiciness level. It was not as spicy as the one at JEM but we could still taste the mala every bite. Not hurting to our mouth and stomach and yet retain its taste. This was a little better than the JEM stall for people who cannot take spiciness.

This is another mala xiang guo stall worth trying.

This is another one of our ladies lunch exploration. Since the weather was fine, we decided to take a bus down to Meiling Street and walk to the market and food centre for lunch. The food centre is situated opposite an Indian school.

The market is on the ground floor and the escalator leads to the food centre on the 2nd floor.

All of us decided to go for tze char today since it is one of the highly recommended stall to try. Here's what we ordered:

1. Sweet and sour fish rice - generous portion of fish fried in sweet and sour sauce. Would consider it as average as compared to some other tze char stall like in AV(Alexandra Village) as the gravy is not tasty enough.
Paulin's Munchies - Tze Char Trail - Sha Bao Xiao Cai Fan (沙煲小菜饭) at Meiling Market - Sweet and sour fish rice

2. Kailan chicken rice - lots of kailan fried with chicken pcs. The chicken is tender and overall dish very tasty but the tze char stall in AV is still preferred.
Paulin's Munchies - Tze Char Trail - Sha Bao Xiao Cai Fan (沙煲小菜饭) at Meiling Market - Kailan chicken rice

3. Claypot ee mee - hot ee mee with lots of seafood. This tasted very good as compared to the rice dishes.
Paulin's Munchies - Tze Char Trail - Sha Bao Xiao Cai Fan (沙煲小菜饭) at Meiling Market - Claypot ee mee

4. Fried beef horfun - this dish tasted very much like char kway teow. Sinfully oily and rich.

Paulin's Munchies - Tze Char Trail - Sha Bao Xiao Cai Fan (沙煲小菜饭) at Meiling Market - Fried beef horfun

5. Salted vegetable soup with rice - homecooked salted vegetable soup with meat, Tofu and tomato. Tasted very homely.

Overall, Sha Bao Xiao Cai Fan is not too bad a tze char stall to try but it's not the best. One thing we know for sure is that portion is very generous.

Another food exploration at JEM foodcourt. Previously we tried the fish soup, Korean food and rojak. Today we are back to try the Indonesian BBQ food stall. It is very similar to the Riverside Indonesian BBQ stall at some Food Republic foodcourt but this stall is under Mian Food and Beverage Pte Ltd instead.

I ordered the grilled fish set while Kevin had the grilled chicken leg set. Each set comes with vegetables and a sunny side up egg. As compared to the Riverside BBQ stall, the chicken leg is much bigger and tasted better. Slightly crispy on the outside and yet still tender.
Paulin's Munchies - Indonesian BBQ at JEM foodcourt Cookhouse - Grilled Chicken Leg BBQ set

The fish is also juicier and bigger. The best thing was the vegetable comes as a standard side and you don't have to top additional $1 for it. All comes in a set at $6 per set. So it's definitely a worth set to eat.

Do stay tune to our next exploration.

Muay Thai usually stands for Thai kickboxing but in this case, it is the name of a Thai stall in Food Corner coffee shop at Toa Payoh Central. Muay Thai offers a quite a wide range of Thai food at very affordable price.

From steam sea bass at $22 to common staple dishes like pineapple rice at $5.
We ordered 2 dishes from their stall. They are sweet and sour fish slices and tom yam fried rice. The sweet and sour fish dish was a little different from the usual.
Paulin's Munchies - Muay Thai at Toa Payoh Central - Sweet and sour fish slices

Paulin's Munchies - Muay Thai at Toa Payoh Central - Tom yam fried rice

Gravy is more watery and there were many more other side ingredients like carrots, cucumbers and bell peppers. The fish was fresh and it has more sourish taste as compared the usual sweetness.

The tom yam fried rice was fried generously with seafood. Prawns were springy and juicy. Taste wise was good as well.

Now they are offerimg set meals at $30 for 2 pple and there are in all 5 dishes with free rice. Definitely an awesome deal to try so do come down now!

Aburi Sushi Heishirou is a newly opened Japanese restaurant located on the 3rd floor of Westgate shopping mall beside 美人锅. Since we are always so in loved with sushi, it was a good opportunity to try this new restaurant which is supposedly to be popular for their aburi sushi as the restaurant is named.

We were welcomed by friendly staff and showed to our seats. We chose the outdoor seats as there was free singing performance by 2 very talented young Chinese singers. Nothing beats enjoying food with good music.

Here's our dinner menu for today:

1. Green salad - we were thinking the portion should be rather small for the price we pay at $7 but were so shocked at their generosity when it came. Fresh vegetables with yummy sesame sauce. Awesome!

2. Aburi tamago sushi - it's egg rolls on rice. The sushi size was huge! I couldn't stuff one pc in my mouth. Haha. The special thing was that the sushi was drizzled with nacho cheese sauce.
Paulin's Munchies - Muay Thai at Toa Payoh Central - Aburi Tamago

3. Dragon roll - special roll with unagi, avocado and king prawn. Roll size was simply huge! Rice was a little soggy but overall tasted good.

4. Saba upon - fried Saba fish in udon soup. Soup base was very good but udon a little floury in taste. Saba fish was juicy and delicious.

5. Chicken nanban - Fried chicken coated with eggs and deep fried. It was drizzled with some Japanese soy sauce. Yummy.

This tze char stall name definitely sounds lucky but it may not be that lucky after all if they do not do enough promotion to attract more crowd. On a weekday evening, there are more people queuing up for other stalls like western food, Chinese dumplings in the coffee shop.

Since this stall was newly opened in September this yr, we decided to give it a try. We ordered 2 staples and 1 vegetable dish to accompany them. I had kung pao chicken rice while Kevin had their recommended JB san lou beehoon

The beehoon is actually chao da beehoon but it fails so much in comparison to the other tze char Yong Kee Seafood stall at Jln Besar. The beehoon looks really burnt but fortunately it still tasted ok. Not much ingredients to go with.
Paulin's Munchies - Tze Char Trail - (Lucky) Charcoal Claypot Chicken Rice Kitchen at Clementi Central - JB San Lau beehoon

My kung pao chicken rice wasn't any much better. There was only a few pcs of chicken with lots of rice. Fortunately we had the fried garlic baby kailan as side dish to accompany the staples.

This is our 2nd visit here. The first time was also using Groupon offer. We were so happy that the offer was once again available. We bought the $24 voucher worth $40. The Groupon is applicable from Mon to Thurs daily and not offerable on any promo items.

Being a Yakitori House, yakitori is definitely a must try. We went for their yakitori joy, which is 3 skewers of yakitori on rice. The yakitori skewers are all chicken. There is 1 chicken meatball, chicken thigh with leek and chicken breast.
Paulin's Munchies - Sumire Yakitori House at Bugis Junction - Yakitori Jyu

All so tenderly grilled and delicious. Would be better if there was slightly more sauce. As side dishes, we had bakudan korokke, a big fried potato ball with egg. When broken into half, you can see the egg yolk oozing out from the potato. It's served with lettuce and mayo. Yummy!

We also had sumire salad, chicken salad with sesame sauce and lastly tori karaage with grated radish and yuzu sauce. This is a must order dish as the chicken batter taste was awesome. The grated radish and yuzu sauce got rid of its greasiness. It's a must order dish.

Looking at the crowd, we have always wanted to try Just Acia at Dhoby Ghaut Exchange. The place is always filled with students and small families. Just Asia offers a wide range of dishes, from western pasta to Korean noodles and Japanese rice.

They all come in set meals which has free flow of drinks and ice cream. No free seating was allowed and we were assigned to our designated seats by the staff.

Payment has to be made upon self ordering before they bring us our cups and dessert bowls for drinks and ice cream.

I ordered grilled chicken cheese with tomato rice while Kevin had herbal chicken with prawn roll set. We also ordered seasonal vegetables as side dish. Food was served within 10 mins. I was rather disappointed with my dish. Rice was cold and cheese not melted at all.

I could have cooked better. Kevin's set was better. At least the herbal chicken was piping hot. Nothing too fantastic in taste though. The prawn roll and seasonal vegetables were the best dishes among all. At least hot and tasty enough.

Though there was no service charge, gst is still applicable. The dishes were not worth the price.

Guess overall, the attractive part was the free flow of drinks and ice cream. This has probably attracted most of the students.

Frankly speaking, this would be our first and last time there.

Hongkong Street Chun Kee Seafood is another popular tze char stall located in Commonwealth neighbourhood. It is on the opposite side of 2 Chef's Eating Place and it is popular for their San Lao horfun and teochew fishhead steamboat.

Surprisingly there wasn't many people on Fri evening. The stall is more accessible with car. For customers taking public transport, it is about 10 mins walk from Commonwealth mrt.

We ordered the following items today:

1. San Lao horfun
Paulin's Munchies - Tze char trail - Hongkong Street Chun Kee Seafood at Commonwealth - San Lao Hor Fun

2. Salted egg pork rib

3. Luo han zai
Paulin's Munchies - Tze char trail - Hongkong Street Chun Kee Seafood at Commonwealth - Luo Han Zai

The San Lao horfun is still as good as last time. Very tasty with lots of beansprouts and sliced fishes. The salted egg pork ribs was one of their newer creation. We could feel our cholesterol level shooting up high as we bite into the tenderly fried pork pcs coated with thick salted egg sauce.

A very good combination. The Luo han zai is a mixed vegetable dish with mushrooms, snow peas, broccoli and cauliflower. This dish was a little salty and would go better with plain rice.

Overall, Hongkong Street Chun Kee seafood is a good tze char stall to visit for dinner with family during the weekends and so give it a try!

It's lunch time!  This time we ladies decided to go nearer by to Alexandra Technopark B (ATPB) for lunch. There were 5 of us and we were debating to eat Rocky Master or Food Barn. Rocky Master offers a wider range of food, from local delights to pizza to sandwiches to salads and pasta.

However price range is a little steeper than Food Barn which offers take away sandwiches and salads. Since we all have different preferences, we decided to try both stalls.

From Food Barn, we ordered the following sandwiches:

1. Hot panini with smoked turkey breast - it's basically smoked turkey breast with cheese and tomato and grilled hot. Simply awesome with the sandwich crispiness and cheesiness.

2. Cold turkey breast sandwiches - this is the typical sandwiches with lettuce, tomatoes and cucumbers. Healthy!

3. Smoked salmon sandwiches - smoked salmon served with wholemeal bread and lettuce, tomatoes and cucumber. Another lover's choice for the working class.

Rocky Master

From Rocky Master, we ordered beef stew pottie pie and teriyaki chicken spaghetti. The pottie pie comes with either soup or salad as side. Chew Li ordered with mushroom soup which was thick and creamy. The pottie pie wasn't really fantastic and could do better.

The teriyaki chicken spaghetti was a better choice. Generous grilled chicken portion on top of spaghetti. Chicken was tender but spaghetti taste could have done better as well.
