Salmon Zukushi is the main theme for the Ichiban Boshi branch at Tiong Bahru Plaza. As the name suggests, it offers a wide range of unique salmon dishes ranging from sushis to dons. We have previously reviewed on this restaurant but we are back here once again to try the salmon dishes created by the branch's chef.

Salmon aburi mentai don - Ichiban Boshi Salmon Zukushi at Tiong Bahru Plaza - Paulin's Munchies

We went for 2 of their salmon dons: salmon california don ($14.90) and salmon aburi mentai don ($15.90). The salmon california don is made up of freshly cut salmon sashimi, tomago egg, crabmeat, avacado topped with crispy flakes and mayo. The combination is absolutely delicious especially with the crunchiness of the flakes. The aburi mentai don is equally good as well. Flame torched salmon with avocado and tamago eggs. The mentai tasted so good and I am so in love with it. Rating: 4/5

We had cereal tori karaage and yasai salad as sides which were reviewed previously. Both tasted still as good. For salmon dishes, Ichiban Boshi Salmon Zukushi is worth a try, except the food waiting time can be little long.

Yaowarat Seafood Restaurant offers Thai street style seafood dishes at affordable prices. The concept is very similar to the Thai Chinese seafood restaurants found in Bangkok Chinatown. Dishes are cooked with the freshest seafood ingredients in Thai local chinese style.

The restaurant is located amongst the shophouses along Teck Chye Terrace. It is about 10mins walk from Nex shopping mall. The restaurant is small and reservations are strongly recommended via their website as follow: http://yaowaratseafood.com.sg.

It is fully booked most of the dinner times. The restaurant is clean and managed by a group of young and friendly staff. Seafood dishes are a must order so we ordered the below:

1. Homemade seafood cake ($5.90) - $5.90 for 2 big juicy pcs of crispily fried seafood cake. Absolutely very very delicious. Rating: 4.2/5
Homemade seafood cake - Yaowarat Seafood Restaurant at Teck Chye Terrace - Paulin's Munchies

2. Stir fried squid with garlic butter ($15.90) - the squid was very very tender and texture just right. We couldn't taste much of the garlic but was full of onions. Not sure if the chef put in by mistake but nevertheless a great dish as well. Rating: 4/5

3. Thai style fried kangkong ($8) - unlike sambal kangkong, this dish is cooked with chilli padi, beanpaste and small garlic cloves. Very fragrantly fried. Rating: 4/5

4. Pork omelette ($8) - had expected the fluffy kind of thai omelette but was disappointed that it was just the ordinary tze char kind of pork omelette. Nothing too special. Rating: 3.8/5
Pork omelette - Yaowarat Seafood Restaurant at Teck Chye Terrace - Paulin's Munchies

There are 3 different sauces to choose from for dipping. Thai sweet chilli sauce for seafood cake, green chilli sauce for seafood and brown chilli sauce for bbq. All these sauces compliment very well with the food.

Dishes are subjected to 10% service charge but no gst. Yaowarat Seafood is definitely a nice family thai restaurant to visit.

Flaming Don ?? is the latest dining concept by Creative Eateries to introduce at Bugis Plus. Located at 5th floor of the shopping mall, this small restaurant offers 15 different kinds of rice bowl to choose from, with a small variety of ramen choices and some sides.

As the name goes, the restaurant should be good for their dons, thus all 6 of us ordered their dons to try. Ordering is self service at the ordering machine. For additional $2.90, one can enjoy free flow of drinks and miso soup. Here's the list of dons that we tried:

1. Japanese pork hamburger don ($12.90) - grilled pork patty with soft runny eggs and honey black pepper sauce. The hamburg patty was overly cooked and very tough. Eggs were not silky and runny. In fact rather dry. Overall, this dish was a disappointment as compared to the picture. Upsize not recommended as they can only add more rice. Rating: 3/5

2. Karaage don ($12.90) - crispy fried chicken with yakitori sauce and mentaiko mayo. The chicken tasted very much like popcorn chicken and the mayo provided didn't taste like mentaiko but normal mayo. Rating: 3.2/5
Karaage don - Flaming Don at Bugis Plus - Paulin's Munchies

3. Chicken curry don ($9.90) - guess this was the nicest dish of all. Japanese chicken with carrots and onions. A dish that will not go too wrong. Rating: 3.5/5
Chicken curry don - Flaming Don at Bugis Plus - Paulin's Munchies

4. Chicken combo don ($12.90) - midwing joints, sumibiyaki chicken thigh, yakitori chicken skewer and onsen egg. The chicken is tough and overly cooked. There was too little sauce, and don tasted too dry. For $4.90, we paid for extra shaker salad that was fresh but nothing special. Rating: 3/5

5. Flaming chicken ramen ($12.90) - charcoal grilled chicken with ramen in butter broth. Broth was thick and garlicky and this dish offered the most tender meat as compared to the rest. Rating: 3.5/5

Prices are subjected to gst but no service charge. Overall, we were rather disappointed with the don quality as we expected something closer to the menu pictures.

For gelato lovers, we would like to recommend this new gelato stall Giovanni L. at Tanjong Pagar Center. The stall is located beside Hans and together with Seattle Pike Chowder. There are 12 flavors of gelato to choose from with their award winning Pistachio gelato as the no. 1 flavor.

We went for my classic favourite After 8 mint today to satisfy my craving. Classic single scoop gelato is priced at $4.80.  Each scoop is served with a pc of crispy butter waffle biscuit. This is definitely one of the best gelato I have eaten. Smooth, creamy and so rich in flavor, especially with the minty dark chocolate. Simply awesome and we enjoyed every single spoon of it.

Mellben Signature has moved from its previous location at Prince Edward Road to current Tanjong Pagar district. Located at Tanjong Pagar Plaza, this seafood tze char is more than just the normal tze char stall. The menu booklet looks very much from a restaurant and it is very much focus on their crab dishes.

Most of the tables are filled with buzzling working class customers and most of them ordered the stall's signature crab dishes. However, being not crab lovers, we decided to try and review other dishes. Ordering was done by the server and we had the following:

1. HK style fried tanghoon ($11) - we thought the dishes were small so we ordered medium for this. We were taken aback by the huge portion and it could easily feed 3 to 4 persons. There were lots of ingredients like crabmeat etc and very fragrantly fried. Thumbs up! Rating: 4.2/5

2. Shanghai vegetables with fried beancurd skin and gingko nuts ($11) - one of their signature vegetable dish which was prettily arranged and cooked with thick seafood sauce. Rating: 3.8/5

3. Prawn rolls ($9) - crispily fried juicy prawn rolls served with plum sauce. Very delicious indeed and simply love the crunchiness of every bite. Rating: 4/5

Overall we felt that the food quality is above the normal tze char though price range is rather pricey. Don't expect to find the normal sweet and sour fish slices at $12 but will be double the price.

49 Seats has re-opened at The Centerpoint after the closure of their 3 other branches at Orchard Central, Bugis and Kreta Ayer. No longer just a 49 seater restautant, it has occupied quite a big space in Centerpoint opposite Mak's Noodles.

The restaurant was having a National Day promotion for the month of August. With every set meal ordered, smoked duck aglio oglio, carbonara and cheesy fries can be ordered at $5.20 nett each. With such a great promo, it has indeed attracted quite a no. of customers.

We ordered their popular fish and chips with tom yum sauce set. The set costs $21.80 and it comes with 1 drink and mushroom soup.
Fish and chips with tom yum sauce set - 49 Seats at The Centerpoint Orchard - Paulin's Munchies

The soup with garlic bread was ordinary. There are 4 sides to choose from: fries, mashed potato, garden salad and pasta salad. We opted for the 2 salads since we had ordered cheesy fries. The fish and chips portion was huge with generous sides. The fish fillet was fresh and crispily fried. The tom yum sauce accompanying it added spice to the fish. Rating: 3.8/5

Fish and chips with tom yum sauce set - 49 Seats at The Centerpoint Orchard - Paulin's Munchies

At $5.20 each, we ordered their smoked duck aglio oglio and cheesy fries. The smoked duck aglio oglio was good in general but failed to have the aglio oglio taste. Lacking the garlicky taste and spice. Rating: 3.2/5. Cheesy fries looks good but the taste was flat. The fries were cold and soft and drizzled with too much nacho cheese. Was a little disappointed with the dish despite other very positive reviews. Rating: 3/5

Henri Charpentier is a popular Japanese cake/dessert shop from Tokyu. So popular for their financiers, it has actually broken the guinness world records for selling the most no. of financiers.
Mille Crepe - Henri Charpentier at Orchard Central - Paulin's Munchies

We were at their Orchard Central branch to eat their lovely and pretty cakes for dessert. We ordered their recommended mille crepe. One slice cost $9.60. Seriously pricey for one slice of cake but we enjoyed it.
Mille Crepe - Henri Charpentier at Orchard Central - Paulin's Munchies

The fresh creme in between each layer was thin and the last layer was lined with a very thin layer of sponge. It is not as sinful and filling as the mille crepe from Lady M. The crepe is much thicker as compared to Lady M's.

Henri Charpentier offers very good cakes with coffee and dessert lovers will definitely love them though cost is a little pricey.

Sin Kee, during the early 90's, was one of the most notable chicken rice hawker stalls. His children has decided to take over their father's food business and decided to introduce other variety of food besides chicken rice.

Besides in Holland Drive, Sin Kee has another shop at Havelock Road. The restaurant is located along the stretch of restaurants where Liang Kee is. The restaurant was very spacious and clean looking but not many tables around. Sin Kee is currently on Fave and we bought $15 worth $30 of food.

We ordered the following:

1. Half combo chicken ($18) - this is a combo of steam white and soy sauce chicken. Chicken was very very tender and portion was huge. We love the soy sauce chicken more as the chicken was more fragrant. The chicken rice was fragrant but not too oily and we love it. Rating: 4/5

3. Wu Xiang ($6) - 5 pcs of crispily fried homemade wu xiang. Spices were enough in the filling and would be even better if they are served with plum sauce. Rating: 4/5

With the closing of many of their branches, Sakae Sushi has made many changes to their menu and introduced many different new creations. Most of their branches has teppanyaki menu included and customers are seriously spoilt for choices.

It has been a long while since we had Sakae and we were back at their Lot One branch this evening. We were so glad that some of our favourite $1.90 dishes are back by popular demand. These includes gyoza, fried tofu and yasai kakiage. Others include the extremely delicious salmon mentai inari at $6.90.

Flipping through their new dishes, we ordered the following:

1. Otah fried soba ($10.90) - portion is small but very fragrantly fried with japanese sauce and seafood. The soba is topped with thick otah. Absolutely delicious! Rating: 4/5

Located in Little Red Dot at Bugis Street, Khao San Aroy Dee-licious is a small Thai stall which offers authentic Thai dishes at affordable prices. Dishes ranged from $5 - $10 and portion is generous as well.

The eating place don't have much seats, so we gotta share table with others. Probably the stall is in a non-airconditioned eating place, the prices are more affordable. We ordered 4 dishes in all today, 1 staple and 3 sides.

All ordering has to be done at the stall and payment done upfront. Prices are subjected to 7% gst. We had the following:

1. Phad Thai ($6.80) - the phad thai is more wetly fried as compared to others and very delicious. The ingredients like prawns are very fresh and generous. Rating: 3.8/5

4. Salted egg chicken ($6.80) - the menu stated 5 pcs but it came in many many small pcs. Most of them are mainly chicken skin and not much chicken meat. The dish was a little dry with not much salted egg sauce. Rating: 3/5
