The Peranankan Restaurant at Claymore Connect

The Peranankan Restaurant is an authentic Straits cuisine restaurant well known for its Peranankan dishes. Located on the 2nd floor of Claymore Connect in Orchard, it offers not only food but Peranankan exhibits as well. 

With POSB/DBS credit card promotion, the restaurant now offers 1 for 1 high tea set at $35++ for weekends. Each peranankan high tea set comes with free pandan lemongrass tea, Melaka coffee or tea. 

The set is fixed with portion by per pax. 1st served was the dry laksa. A little disappointing in taste as the dish tasted bland. The rest of the dishes were served on a huge nostalgic looking tray. 

We would highly recommend their kueh pie tee, ngoh hiang, spingroll and satay babi kongbak bao. For desserts, their durian puree is the best. Some of the dishes are very strong in spices taste like lemongrass, and we are so not used to it.

Unless you are a vivid peranankan dish lover, this high tea set may not be recommended. Would personally prefer english high tea set anytime.

Kuma Cheese Toast at Westgate

After Say Chiizu, Kuma Cheese Toast from JB is the next upcoming cheese toast stall in SG. Sharing the same stall as Original Cake Shop, Kuma cheese toast attracted many of the young with its bright orange cute bear cover. There are 4 flavours in total: original, matcha, chocolate and rainbow. 

We went for there for their rainbow cheese ($6.90). The toast is ready made with the rainbow cheese in between. The baker will just spread the margarine on the toast and put them on the hotplate. 

Unlike Say Chiizu, the margarine taste is very strong and cheese tad salty. It would be good to share with its big portion unlike the small pc from Say Chiizu. In terms of toast control, Kuma seems to have lost it as some of the toasts are burnt. Say Chiizu would be preferred over Kuma in terms of taste and quality.

Chun Kee Seafood White Beehoon at Cheong Chin Nam Road

When talked about white beehoon, the first restaurant to be thought of is Sembawang 白 beehoon. Sembawang white beehoon is indeed highly recommended as their white beehoon with their specially made chilli is a heavenly combination.

However today, we found another relatively good alternative if you do not wish to join the long queue during meal times at Sembawang White Beehoon restaurant. 

Chun Kee Seafood White Beehoon is good as well. Located along Chun Tin Road at Upper Bt Timah, this local tze char restaurant is located at the end of the stretch.

We ordered 4 dishes in total.

1. Seafood white beehoon ($5.80) - we ordered the small size beehoon which was sufficient for 2 to eat if not a big eater. The portion is generous with seafood and it has a slightly stronger wok taste as compared to Sembawang. But I must say its awesome with the chilli as well. Rating: 4.2/5

2. Sui Gao Soup ($8) - homemade juicy dumplings with white cabbage in soup. A very delicious soup indeed. Simply love their freshly made dumplings. Rating: 4.2/5

3. Fried tofu with oats ($10) - each pc of tofu is dunked in mayo and then deep fried. The oats on the tofu is a little soggy but the overall taste still good. Rating: 4/5

4. Prawn roll ($5) - we ordered their mini appetizer portion good enough for 2 persons. The roll was crispy but not as tasty as some others that were eaten. Rating: 3.8/5

Overall, Chun Kee is a nice place for family and with no gst and service charge, why not come and try soon!

Imakatsu at The Star Vista

Imakatsu, a tonkatsu centric restaurant, offers a wide range of tonkatsu dishes. Just like Tonkichi, Imakatsu offers free flow of shredded cabbage as a salad side with every tonkatsu set ordered. 

There are currently 2 branches in SG. One at Star Vista and the newer one at Tanjong Pagar Center. 

The shredded cabbage was served even before dishes were ordered. There is free flow of Japanese sesame sauce accompanying the salad. The cabbage is finer and more moist as compared to Tonkichi's.

The wait for the main course was long. Had to wait for 20mins before our premium mentaiko pork zen ($26.80) and chicken thigh don ($14.80) were served. 

Would highly recommend their mentaiko pork zen as the juicy fried cutlet is topped with generous fresh mentaiko, spring onions and seaweed. So tenderly fresh and soft and goes so well with a bowl of fragrant japanese rice. Rating: 4/5

Unfortunately I did not manage to capture a pic of the chicken thigh don due to some camera fault. But don was delicious with the eggs and onions and chicken cutlet also juicy and fresh. Rating: 3.9/5

Imakatsu serves as a good alternative other than Tonkichi so why not give it a try!

ToriGo at Hillion Mall

ToriGo, a Halal certified restaurant, serves a wide range of chicken dishes, very similar concept to its competitor TenderFresh. 

Ranging from bbq to fried chicken to pasta and rice, ToriGo has also started to offer non-chicken dishes like Fish and Chips and Salmon pasta. 

The branch at Hillion is a small restaurant with about 20 to 30 seaters. Ordering is self service at the cashier. We ordered the below for dinner: 

1. Giant bbq leg ($7.90) - this is a value for money dish with a giant bbq leg with rice and coleslaw. The leg was tenderly done and it goes well with the chicken flavored rice. Rating: 3.5/5

2. Bbq whole chicken ($13.90) - whole bbq kampong chicken tenderly grilled to retained its meat juiciness and freshness. Personally, would prefer TenderFresh as the chicken is more flavourful. Rating: 3.5/5

3. Cheesy fries ($4.50) - thumbs-up for this dish. Crispily fried fries topped with mayo, nacho cheese and curry powder. The combination was awesomely good. Rating: 4/5

For a quick healthier fastfood chicken meal, ToriGo can definitely be considered.

Toastbox at Yew Tee Point

Introducing new bread menu from Toastbox. Spicy tuna with egg toast and Egg with cheese toast. Priced at $6.40, each set comes with a large cup of kopi/tea. 

The spicy tuna was tangy in taste and it has the Thai herby taste. A fusion twist indeed. Portion is small and definitely not enough to fill the guy's tummy. For its taste, its worth the try but in terms of price, definitely not worth it.

To fill the tummy, it would be recommended to try their mee goreng set instead. Priced at $5.60, the noodle comes with egg and luncheon meat plus a large cup of tea/kopi. Tasted quite good and portion is just right.

Besides this, they also have the tok gong chilli crab combi. So visit Toastbox while promotion is still on.

Monster Curry at JEM

Monster Curry, as the restaurant name mentions, offers a delectable wide range of Japanese curry dishes. 5 levels of curry spiciness to choose from and we are allowed to choose as many toppings as we like on top of the standard dish. 

Besides curry rice dishes, Monster Curry has started offering curry ramen, salads and desserts. To some other branches, there are Japanese pastas as well. 

We opted for their value for money Monster Combo at $25. Its a huge plate of curry rice with pork katsu topped with mozerella cheese, fried ebi, fried fish fillet, pork shabu and shredded cabbage. 

We chose level 2 spiciness. The katsu was delicious. Did not like the pork shabu as the porky smell was rather strong. Luckily it had the curry sauce to cover the taste. 

As compared to Coco Ichiban, would prefer it over Monster Curry because of the curry sauce. Monster's version is a little more watery and salty as compared to Coco.

Wok Master at Westgate

Wok Master is another venture that is brought to you by the same folks from Coffee Hive. Still exploring and touching on local dishes, Wok Master offers affordable tze char dishes in comfort.

The 1st branch was opened at City Square Mall and has attracted a relatively large crowd of people with good reviews. Their 2nd branch was opened in Westgate basement.

Via Eatigo, we gotten a very good bargain at 30% off all ala-carte dishes on the menu. The staffs were friendly and very prompt in service. We ordered 3 mains with white rice.

1. Golden salted egg spare ribs ($12) - juicy spare ribs fragrantly fried in salted egg sauce, chilli padi and curry leaves. Love the taste as the sauce was just right in flavour. Rating: 4/5

2. Golden mushroom beancurd ($12) - braised cabbage with golden mushrooms, carrot and beancurd skin. So nicely brsised with gravy. Rating: 4/5

3. Claypot eggplant ($10) - braised eggplant with saucy mince meat, mushroom sauce. Not bad in taste but the eggplant could have been softer. Goes very well with a bowl of white rice. Rating: 3.9/5

We love their portion and also the prompt service though there was a crowd. Will definitely be back again to try their other dishes, especially the seafood ones.
