Located along the stretch of restaurants opposite Novena Church, Novena Peranankan offers typical home cooked Nonya Food in a very cosy homely environment.

Many are very regular customers whom will be back frequently to try many of their special dishes. We were in for a deal when we visited yesterday as they had dried mee siam as their speciality dish.

1. Dry mee siam ($28) - deliciously fried dry mee siam topped generously with lots of fresh prawns. The dry mee siam was really appetizing with the loads of lime squeezed in. A must order dish if it's available! Rating: 4/5

2. Ayam bua keluak ($9) - we ordered the small size as we had quite a no of dishes. The bua keluak taste was a little blend. Would be good if the gravy was a little thicker and stronger in taste. Rating: 3.8/5

3. Babi ponteh ($9) - braised pork with bamboo shoots and mushrooms. Expected it to have very strong porky or smelly bamboo shoot taste but was really surprised by its awesome taste and pork tenderness. The dish is cooked with lean meat and would be good if it's a little more fatty. Rating: 3.9/5

4. Assam fish pedas ($14) - thick slices of red grouper cooked in thick assam sauce with brinjals, ladysfinger and pineapple slices. A very appetizing dish and tasted especially good on a cold weather. Rating: 4/5

5. Ngoh hiang ($12) - our favourite dish!! Love the crunchy water chestnut and minced meat inside the roll. Tasted so much like what my grandmother makes. Can't just stop at one! Rating: 4.2/5

6. Sambal ladysfinger ($12) - we ordered the larger size of it as we are vegetable lovers. The ladysfinger is very well cooked. Not too soft or too hard. The crunchiness of the ladysfinger was just right. Rating: 4/5

7. Nonya chap chye ($12) - braised cabbage with carrot, black fungus and tang hoon. Gravy was a little too watery but taste was still ok. Would prefer it to have a slightly stronger dried shrimp taste. Rating: 3.8/5

For a decent Peranankan meal, Novena Peranankan can definitely be considered. The ambience of the restaurant is very heart warming and the very decent dishes that it offers.

Curry Times is not new and we have previously reviewed on some of their dishes. Recently, Curry Times have introduced more than 30 new items to their menu and we are here to try them.

We ordered 4 dishes in all and they are being served in the following order:

1. Curry chap chye ($6.90) - small in portion and ordinary. Gravy was a little diluted and bland in taste. Vegetables are softly stewed though. Rating: 3.2/5

2. Rendang chicken rice ($11.90) - tenderly stewed rendang chicken with rice. Rendang spice was sufficient but would be better if its a little more oily. A little dry to accompany with rice. Rating: 3.5/5

3. Beancurd vegetable roll ($6.90) - we love this dish the best. Beancurd skin wrapped with vegetable filling like shredded mushrooms and radish. This side dish tasted really good with thai chilli sauce. Rating: 3.8/5

4. Chicken maggi goreng ($8.90) - brings back my childhood memories of eating dry maggi mee with seasoning. The chicken pcs are a little tough and dry. Rating: 3.2/5

Overall, Curry Times has indeed added more creativity to their dishes but could do a little more improvement in terms on taste.

Curry Times, a restaurant managed by the same boss of Old Chang Kee, serves a wide range of nonya chinese dishes. Depending on the branch location, the menu variety changes. The branch at Westgate offers much more choices as compared to the one at ARC.

We managed to get a table within 15 mins of waiting. We were allowed to order our food first while waiting. We decided to try their rice dishes as they simply look delicious from the pictures.

I ordered curry fish fillet rice while hubby ordered sambal chicken rice.

Nonya chap chye was our vegetable dish to share and ended our dinner with a bowl of cold bobo chacha.

The fish fillet is fresh and well fried. Crispy on the outside while soft on the inside. It goes especially well with homemade curry sauce. Mmmm...

The sambal chicken comes with sides like ah char and fried egg. The ah char tasted real good with the crunchy cucumber and peanut bits.

The chap chye is on the average. Tasty but nothing unusual. Bobo chacha wasn't too sweet but we felt it was a little too diluted. Nevertheless portion was generous.

Overall, Curry Times is a place for one who wants to come for quick yet tasty nonya dishes.

Newly renovated Tiong Bahru Plaza is now open. Though there are still some store renovation going on, most of them are up with the food street ready. The food street is on the 2nd level and it comprises of a few restaurants like Dolce Tokyo, A One Claypot etc.

Both of us decided to go for Peranakan Cuisine for a change today as Nonya restaurants are hard to come by. We were approached by friendly staff and made us feel at home. The recommended dishes were chin cha lok omelette, satay bohong (pork slices with peanut sauce) & nonya chap chye

We both enjoyed the omelette and chap chye as it gives us a very homecook taste.

I do not enjoy the bohong dish as it was a little too porky for my liking. One thing definitely to taste is the belacan dip. Spicy with excellent lemongrass taste.

There are many other dishes to try but I believe there are better nonya restaurants to choose from.
