The House of Peranankan Group of restaurants is a pioneer in Nonya cuisine and it is managed by a group of Peranankan of 3 generations. Bob Seah, who is the owner, first established Peranankan Inn in the 1980s and he created many inspiring Peranankan dishes like assam prawns.

We were at their Capitol Piazza outlet to try this exquisite Peranankan cuisine. The ambience of the restaurant was lovely and very nicely decorated with Nonya settings. We ordered 3 mains and 1 appetizer for dinner this evening.

1. Nonya ngoh hiang ($8) - 1 roll of crispily fried ngoh hiang cut into 5 pcs. The filling was crunchy and filled with bits of water chestnuts, minced prawn and pork. Goes nicely with the sweet sauce and had the right spice taste. Would be better if it is less mushy. Rating: 3.8/5

2. Nonya chap chye ($10) - braised cabbage in claypot with black fungus, beancurd skin and glass noodles. The taste was just right and goes really well with the rice. Rating: 4/5

3. Beef rendang ($14) - small beef cubes in rendang sauce. The beef was slightly tough but the rendang sauce was quite well done and flavorful. Rating: 3.9/5

4. Ikan tempra fillet ($12) - one small pc of red snapper fillet fried with lots of onions, lemongrass in sweet and sour sauce. Was surprisingly delicious and appetizing! Rating: 4.2/5

Portion of the food is really very very small and would be better if it is served in a bigger portion. Maybe the Nonyas enjoy small exquisite dishes. The place is definitely not recommended for huge eaters. Service was overall ok but food could be a little warmer.

A summary of what we had:

My overall ratings:

Located along the stretch of restaurants opposite Novena Church, Novena Peranankan offers typical home cooked Nonya Food in a very cosy homely environment.

Many are very regular customers whom will be back frequently to try many of their special dishes. We were in for a deal when we visited yesterday as they had dried mee siam as their speciality dish.

1. Dry mee siam ($28) - deliciously fried dry mee siam topped generously with lots of fresh prawns. The dry mee siam was really appetizing with the loads of lime squeezed in. A must order dish if it's available! Rating: 4/5

2. Ayam bua keluak ($9) - we ordered the small size as we had quite a no of dishes. The bua keluak taste was a little blend. Would be good if the gravy was a little thicker and stronger in taste. Rating: 3.8/5

3. Babi ponteh ($9) - braised pork with bamboo shoots and mushrooms. Expected it to have very strong porky or smelly bamboo shoot taste but was really surprised by its awesome taste and pork tenderness. The dish is cooked with lean meat and would be good if it's a little more fatty. Rating: 3.9/5

4. Assam fish pedas ($14) - thick slices of red grouper cooked in thick assam sauce with brinjals, ladysfinger and pineapple slices. A very appetizing dish and tasted especially good on a cold weather. Rating: 4/5

5. Ngoh hiang ($12) - our favourite dish!! Love the crunchy water chestnut and minced meat inside the roll. Tasted so much like what my grandmother makes. Can't just stop at one! Rating: 4.2/5

6. Sambal ladysfinger ($12) - we ordered the larger size of it as we are vegetable lovers. The ladysfinger is very well cooked. Not too soft or too hard. The crunchiness of the ladysfinger was just right. Rating: 4/5

7. Nonya chap chye ($12) - braised cabbage with carrot, black fungus and tang hoon. Gravy was a little too watery but taste was still ok. Would prefer it to have a slightly stronger dried shrimp taste. Rating: 3.8/5

For a decent Peranankan meal, Novena Peranankan can definitely be considered. The ambience of the restaurant is very heart warming and the very decent dishes that it offers.

The Peranankan Restaurant is an authentic Straits cuisine restaurant well known for its Peranankan dishes. Located on the 2nd floor of Claymore Connect in Orchard, it offers not only food but Peranankan exhibits as well.

With POSB/DBS credit card promotion, the restaurant now offers 1 for 1 high tea set at $35++ for weekends. Each peranankan high tea set comes with free pandan lemongrass tea, Melaka coffee or tea.

The set is fixed with portion by per pax. 1st served was the dry laksa. A little disappointing in taste as the dish tasted bland. The rest of the dishes were served on a huge nostalgic looking tray.

We would highly recommend their kueh pie tee, ngoh hiang, spingroll and satay babi kongbak bao. For desserts, their durian puree is the best. Some of the dishes are very strong in spices taste like lemongrass, and we are so not used to it.

Unless you are a vivid peranankan dish lover, this high tea set may not be recommended. Would personally prefer english high tea set anytime.
