Kuriya Japanese Market at JEM

For quick sushi, sashimi and cooked Japanese dinner, Kuriya Japanese Market serves the best option for a one stop for all place. 

You can look for your favourite sushi and sashimi dishes offerable in Ichiban Boshi or Sushi outlets and yet paying at a more affordable prices. For those who don't prefer cold stuff, they can try their hot dishes like udon, bentos etc. 

We were at there JEM outlet today located at the basement. We choose a variety of sushi and salad  accompanied with hot udon and sides. Here's what we had: 

1. Salmon sashi salad ($8.90) - 5 thick and fresh slices of salmon sashimi on fresh crunchy lettuce with sesame soya sauce. A very healthy appetizer to start. Rating: 3.5/5

2. Mentai tamago sushi ($3.90) - 3pcs of sushi topped with tamago and torched with mentaiko sauce. Would be great if the sauce is more. Rating: 3.5/5

3. Tuna inari ($3.90) -  maybe the sushi has been left around for some time, it was really cold and hard. Nothing beats the freshly made ones in Ichiban. Rating: 3/5

4. Chicken karaage curry udon ($8.90) - the curry sauce was diluted and tad disappointed with the taste as it was blend. Rating: 3/5

5. Chawanmushi ($2.90) - this is an add on side dish together with miso soup for the udon ordered. Ordinary chawanmushi. Rating: 3/5

Guess it depends on branches, the one at Causeway Point and Great World City offers better sushi and dishes. For a quick simple Jap meal, Kuriya can be considered.

Lotus Thai at Paya Lebar Square

Located at 2nd floor of Paya Lebar Square, Lotus Thai is a Halal certified restaurant serving quite a large range of authentic Thai food.

We had 4 dishes in all: 

1. Thai fish cake ($7.90) - 4 juicy pcs of thai otah fish cakes with sweet chilli sauce. Did not find it so fantastic as what the server as described. Was a little dry on the outer skin. Rating: 3.5/5

2. Red seafood tom yum soup ($10.90) - this was a very appetizing dish that we enjoyed. Love the spiciness and sourness of the soup. Seafood was fresh as well. Rating: 3.8/5

3. Garlic chicken ($10.90) - fragrantly fried chicken with garlic bits. The chicken pcs were tender and it serves as a good dish with rice. Yummy! Rating: 4/5

4. Mixed vegetables ($8.80) - portion is small and nothing too fantastic about it. Could have done better. Rating: 3.2/5

Overall, we still found their Jln Besar branch better as the dishes are more well done. Food serving was also a little slower here.

Aburi Sushi Heishirou at Westgate

This is not a new restaurant and I have reviewed on their delicious aburi sushi and tamago previously. Today we were back to try their all popular Heishirou set. There are 3 different sets to choose from and all priced at $35 each. For small eaters the set can be shared by 2. 

We ordered the set with their all popular heishirou roll, chicken karaage, salad, chawamushi, orange and mini soba. All these dishes are served on a large Japanese serving bowl filled with dry ice. The food tasted as good as it looks especially for the mini soba and karaage. The roll was fresh with the fried soft shell crab... Mmmm.... 

Aside from the set, we ordered ther agedashi tofu. Priced at $8, it is a little expensive for 4pcs of tofu but they were delicious and big in size. 

Overall, Aburi Heishirou still maintains its name and it continued to be one of our favourite Japanese restaurant in Jurong.

Peony Jade at Keppel Club

Peony Jade has been around for some time, with their first branch located at Clarke Quay and it is very popular for their wedding banquets. This one at Keppel Club is recommended for their dim sum buffet. With the current promotion on hand of every 2nd diner at 50% off, it's definitely worth a try!


We were here 3 years ago for the same dim sum buffet and was a little disappointed that the standard dropped a little, especially for their char siew su which used to be so buttery and flaky. Currently its a little dry with much little floss.

Some of the must order dim sum includes har gow, wasabi prawn, coffee ribs, fried banana with prawn, liu sa bao, char siew bao and finally, fried prawn in bi feng tang style.

There are other 1 time dishes like lobster vermicelli, sweet and sour pork.

The dessert range has reduced quite a bit and do not offer orh nee anymore.

Service was great but food was served a little too slowly. Do cater more time if one wants to try their dim sum buffet. Price is at about $38 per pax.
