Before proceeding to a lovely holy concert by some local, Malaysian and Taiwanese artistes at Kallang Theatre, we tried Aji-ichi at Kallang Wave Mall. This Japanese restaurant is a little hard to find, as it is located at a secluded corner of the mall at level 2. To find it, you have to follow the passage way along koufu and follow the signs along the way and on the floor.
There wasn't many customers when we reached at 545pm. Ordering was self service and payment has to be made upfront before food is served. Prices are subjected to gst but no service charge. We ordered some of the recommended and popular dishes as follow:
1. Salmon sashimi salad ($9.90) - fresh lettuce topped with 4 thick and fresh salmon sashimi slices. With the japanese salad sauce, it whipped up our appetite for the next dish. Rating: 4/5
2. Japanese tartar chicken ($3.30) - 3pcs of juicy fried chicken topped with homemade tartar sauce. The chicken was a little soggy probably caused by the sauce. Rating: 3.5/5
3. Tuna inari sushi ($3.90) - fresh and delicious tuna inari sushi. The inari was sweeter as compared to the ones we have at ichiban. We personally prefer the less sweet version. Rating: 3.8/5
4. Aji special maki ($13.90) - 8 pcs of salmon topped sushi rolls stuffed with crabstick and avocado. It was then torched and drizzled with miso sauce. Very delicious indeed! Rating: 4/5
5. Pork yakiniku curry udon ($12.90) - udon was cooked to the right springy texture and served with a generous portion of pork curry. Not too rich yet tasty. Rating: 4/5
Aji-ichi is definitely an affordable Japanese for the young and old.
