Our 1st review of Marugame Udon was in Tokyo in April this year. We found the udon smooth and springy but did not like the fried side dishes as they were rather plain.
Marugame opened its first branch in Singapore at ION Orchard basement, right opposite Lin Zhi Yuan BBQ pork. Prices are much steeper as compared to in Tokyo but the variety is much more. We ordered 2 regular bowl udons and 2 sides for dinner today.
1. Tomato beef udon ($11.90) - priced at 11.90 per regular bowl, the springy smooth udon is doused with slightly thick tomato soup base and topped with broccoli and sliced tender beef. Love the springiness of the noodles. Rating: 3.8/5
2. Pork udon in spicy miso soup ($11.90) - I personally prefer this soup base better. The spiciness added the kick to the dish. Pork slices are extremely tender as well and topped with broccoli, lady's finger and corn. Rating: 4/5
3. Chicken karaage ($2.50) - 3 pcs of juicy and well marinated fried chicken string on the stick. Super duper flavourful as compared to the one we ate in Tokyo. Rating: 3.9/5
4. Fried squid and vegetables mixed ($3) - tasted more like fishcake then squid. Nothing too special to comment on. Rating: 3.5/5
There are more sauces and condiments free to be taken as compared to Tokyo. We will definitely visit it again to try their cold udon this round.
